MODEMENT Queen｜Celina Ma
DARE TO……LOVE MYSELF！
MODEMENT Queen – Celina Ma
translated by Wendy Liang
At last Thursday’s VIP SS19 launch event, we invited Celina Ma, former public relations director of Gucci Asia Pacific to share her take on the theme of “DARE TO”. Having worked in the fashion industry for more than 20 years, Celina has been part of a number of notable brands, including Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein. It’s perhaps easy then, to imagine a career of luxury and glamour – but as she has shared in her interview, it is not always so.
“It was not until I left the fashion industry that I discovered that life really comes in two stages – and that the second part had just begun.”Celina Ma
In the discussion, Celina described how a person’s life can be divided into two parts. The first part, as she recalls from experience, is the one belonging to the young professional: pursuing financial stability, establishing your status among corporate ranks, defining your own social identity. In a city like Hong Kong, it’s a necessary one – and one which she spent largely in fashion circles.
Listening to her early experiences, it seems that this part of her life was defined by hard work, that was not without struggle. Though many know her as the former GUCCI Asia Pacific Public Relations Director, it is little-known that she began her career in the auditing industry. With a long-time dream of working in the fashion dream, and little means to get there, it took her more than ten years to arrive at her renowned position at GUCCI. After leaving Gucci, Celina joined Ralph Lauren as the Vice President of PR and Communications, hoping to fulfil the role that the position’s predecessors had fallen short in. Though she stayed in the position for two years, things evolve faster than ever in the modern age. Companies, technology, and people must change with time – and as a result, she soon found that she had to leave the scene.
Though it was an obvious let-down in the beginning, the indefinite holiday Celina found herself on was an opportunity in disguise – it offered her a chance to slow down and re-evaluate her life. Whereas previously, she’d flown more than ten times to Paris, it was inevitably a work trip: brief hotel stays, office visits, the occasional shopping mall, and the inevitable return to the airport. Yet, after leaving her post, she found the opportunity to return to Paris and explore the museums she had no time to see before. Whilst work was the most important aspect of her life, she found that the break offered a chance to move in a different direction. And so began the second part of her life – the focus on fulfillment, to cultivate passions, memories, and hobbies beyond the materialistic pursuits of life.
Leaving the fashion circle, Celina notes that she had discovered more possibilities and pathways, and that to her, the world seemed bigger than it originally was. She is current the head of the Communications and Admissions Department of an international school. Though she is a different person now, than she had been in her PR career, she says that she is now thankfully happy.
DARE TO…LOVE MYSELF
During the discussion, Celina mentioned that she had been very strict with herself – giving something 100% was just a normal requirement. Yet, as the second part of life begins, learning how to love ourselves perhaps becomes the most important.
